Transfer lifts Smyrna with
two TDs in opener

HENDERSONVILLE — Smyrna's offense took a half to get into the end zone Thursday night. When it did, it was the newest Bulldog who made the biggest splash. Senior Alex Vick, a transfer from Olive Branch, Miss., caught a touchdown pass and ran for a score to lead the Bulldogs to a 23-0 win over Class 5A defending state champion Beech. "He was nervous at first," Smyrna senior Jeremiah Bryson said. "Once he calmed down, he made some big plays. I'm just glad he chose to come to Smyrna High School."

Vick caught two passes for 37 yards. His second reception, a 28-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Steve Wilson, gave Smyrna a 9-0 lead
with 9:26 left in the third quarter. That helped spark Smyrna's offense, which failed to get into the end zone in the first half despite three
opportunities from inside the Beech 20-yard line. The Bulldogs (1-0) squandered one scoring opportunity from inside the Beech 2-yard line, and
had one first-half touchdown pass dropped.

Smyrna was forced to settle for a 19-yard field goal by Marshall Burkett with 1.6 seconds left for a 3-0 halftime lead. Beech (0-1), however, couldn't muster any offense against Smyrna's lightning-quick defense. The Buccaneers finished with 125 yards of offense. Smyrna's Kece Fleming added a 7-yard TD run to increase the lead to 16-0. Vick scored on a 24-yard touchdown run for the final margin. Bryson, who has multiple Division I college offers, including Pittsburgh, North Carolina and Maryland, finished with 114 yards on 16 carries. Wilson was 7-of-13 for 103 yards. However, he rarely played in the second half because of leg cramps.

"Our defense played hard in the first half, holding them to a 3-0 lead," Beech Coach Anthony Crabtree said. "They're just better than us. They've got athletes and are sound up front."

HENDERSONVILLE — Beech's offense sputtered against 6A power Smyrna during Week 0, but the Buccaneers were virtually unstoppable Friday night against visiting Clarksville Northwest. Beech (1-1) scored on seven of its nine possessions and rolled to a 48-6 win over the Vikings, just a
week after being shut out by the Bulldogs. "We have a big line, and it was just a matter of them firing off the ball," said Beech tailback Travis
Haymer, who scored five touchdowns in the first half. "They made the big holes.

"Smyrna was so big and fast, and they really hit you. This was a lot different." After forcing Beech to punt on its first possession,
Northwest (0-1) struggled to stop Haymer and the Buccaneers. The senior, who played fullback on Beech's 5A state title team a year ago, scored on runs of 2, 23, 42, 5 and 3 in the first half. He had 141 yards on 16 carries in the first half and finished with 161 yards before being pulled early in the third. Three of his scores came on the first play of drives.

Beech recovered three fumbles in the first two quarters and led 35-0 at halftime; the mercy rule was in effect for the second half. "We play hard and hit hard," said Beech senior lineman Alex Gomer, who recovered one of the three fumbles. He also scored a second-half touchdown as the team's fullback, replacing an injured Kyle Mortensen. "It was a big-time difference from last week and this week. We controlled the line and
stepped it up." Gomer's 3-yard scoring run and a 15-yard touchdown run by Justin Cherry closed out the Beech's scoring. Northwest scored with just seven seconds left on a 2-yard run by William Wofford. Before their final drive, the Vikings had just 10 yards of total offense. Cherry had 70 yards on 11 carries for Beech. Lane Fernandez led Northwest with 77 yards on 14.carries.
